Turn your dream of flying into reality with Aerohire’s Microlight Pilot Training programme. Our experienced instructors provide extensive, hands-on training tailored to your pace, guiding you through every stage of becoming a confident and capable pilot. With access to our modern training aircraft and professional facilities, you’ll develop the skills and knowledge needed to enjoy the freedom of recreational flying, explore new destinations, or build the foundations for further aviation training. Whether you’re looking to fly for fun or begin a lifelong passion for aviation, training with Aerohire is your gateway to endless possibilities in the skies.
The NPPL(M) is a pilots license that allows you to fly microlight aircraft for non-commercial purposes. The NPPL(M) is a simpler and more accessible license designed for recreational flying within the UK, allowing you to enjoy the freedom of personal flying, explore new destinations, and build valuable aviation experience, whether you’re flying purely for leisure or using it as a stepping stone into further aviation training.
Training for the NPPL(M) combines practical flight training with ground-based theoretical study, giving you the knowledge and skills needed to become a safe and confident microlight pilot. The minimum hours to complete the course is 25, inducing a total of 10 hours supervised solo.
Flight Training
You’ll complete a programme of hands-on flight instruction with one of our qualified instructors, covering all aspects of flying a microlight aircraft, including:
- Aircraft handling and manoeuvres
- Take-offs and landings
- Navigation and cross-country flying
- Emergency procedures
- Radio communication and airspace awareness
Training is completed at your own pace, with both dual instruction and supervised solo flying included as you progress through the course.
Ground School
Alongside your flying lessons, you’ll study the theoretical side of aviation, including topics such as:
- Air law
- Meteorology
- Navigation
- Flight performance and planning
- Aircraft technical knowledge
- Human performance and limitations
You’ll complete written examinations to demonstrate your understanding of these subjects.
Medical Requirements
Before flying solo, you’ll need to meet the relevant medical requirements for your license, either by completing a self declared medical, or a Class 2 medical. Our experienced instructors and members of staff will help guide you through this.
Skills Test
At the end of your training, you’ll complete a practical skills test with an approved examiner, demonstrating your ability to safely operate a microlight aircraft, navigate effectively, and handle a variety of flight scenarios confidently.
The time required to complete your NPPL(M) will vary depending on factors such as your availability, training frequency, and weather conditions. Most students complete their training within 6 months to 2 years, with some choosing to train casually around work or other commitments, while others progress more quickly through intensive training.
Because all training is conducted at your own pace, you can tailor your flying schedule to suit your lifestyle and goals. Regular lessons often lead to faster progress and greater continuity, helping you build confidence and experience more efficiently.
To begin training for a Microlight Private Pilot Licence (PPL(M)), you’ll need to meet a few straightforward requirements designed to ensure you’re safe and ready to fly microlight aircraft.
- Be at least 14 years old to start training
