The Light Aircraft Pilot’s Licence (LAPL) is a simpler and more accessible pilot’s licence for those who want to fly light aircraft. While the LAPL allows you to fly for leisure, it has some restrictions compared to a PPL, making it ideal for those who want to keep things straightforward.

The training for a LAPL includes practical flight training and theoretical knowledge, but with lower minimum requirements compared to the PPL:

  1. Flight Training
    • Minimum Flight Hours: You’ll need to complete at least 30 hours of flight training.
      • At least 15 hours must be dual instruction with an instructor.
      • At least 6 hours must be solo flight time, including 3 hours of solo cross-country navigation.
    • You’ll learn the basics of flying, including handling the aircraft, navigation, and emergency procedures.
  2. Ground School
    • Like the PPL, the LAPL requires you to pass 9 written exams, covering:
      • Air law
      • Operational Procedures
      • Human Performance
      • Meteorology
      • Aircraft General Knowledge
      • Principles of Flight
      • Communications
      • Navigation
      • Flight Planning and Performance
    • The theoretical knowledge syllabus the same as the PPL, so the exams can be credited to a PPL further down the line.
    • A practical Radio Telephony Test is also required –  known as the (FRTOL)
  3. Medical Certification
    • You’ll need a LAPL Medical Certificate, which has slightly less stringent requirements than the Class 2 Medical required for the PPL. A Class 2 Medical and above is also suitable for the LAPL, and is recommended if you wish to progress further in an aviation career.
  4. Skill Test
    • You’ll complete a practical skill test with an examiner to demonstrate your ability to safely pilot a light aircraft.

The LAPL is faster to complete than the PPL, with most students finishing within 3 to 12 months, depending on their availability and weather conditions. The shorter flight hour requirement makes it more accessible for those with limited time.

Feature LAPL                PPL
Flight Hours Minimum 30 hours Minimum 45 hours

Geographical Limit Valid within the UK. Valid globally
Aircraft Weight  Limited to aircraft under 2,000kg Covers a wider range of aircraft
Privileges Recreational flying only Recreational or as a foundation for commercial training
Cost Generally lower due to fewer hours Higher due to longer training

The LAPL is ideal for those looking to fly smaller light aircraft recreationally within Europe. If you don’t plan to pursue advanced ratings or commercial aviation, the LAPL provides an efficient and cost-effective way to enjoy the freedom of the skies.

  • Be at least 17 years old to obtain your LAPL (training can start younger).
