IMC/ IR(R) Rating
£3,675.00
The Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) Rating, now officially known as the Instrument Rating (Restricted) or IR(R), is an optional addition to a Private Pilot’s Licence (PPL) that allows you to fly in reduced visibility and poor weather conditions. It’s specifically designed to improve safety and expand the conditions under which private pilots can operate. While not a full Instrument Rating (IR), the IR(R) is a valuable rating for PPL holders who want to build their confidence and skills for navigating in the UK’s often unpredictable weather.

It’s specifically designed to improve safety and expand the conditions under which private pilots can operate. While not a full Instrument Rating (IR), the IR(R) is a valuable rating for PPL holders who want to build their confidence and skills for navigating in the UK’s often unpredictable weather.
The IMC/IR(R) training focuses on instrument flying skills, teaching you to fly and navigate using only cockpit instruments, without visual reference to the ground. Here’s what’s included:
- Flight Training
- Minimum Flight Hours: You’ll need to complete at least 15 hours of instrument flight training.
- Training covers:
- Basic instrument flying skills (e.g., flying straight and level, turns, climbs, and descents).
- Instrument navigation using radio aids such as VOR, NDB, and GPS.
- Approaches to airfields using instrument approaches like ILS or RNAV.
- Emergency procedures for dealing with reduced visibility or navigation equipment failure.
- Ground School
- Theoretical knowledge is essential, covering topics such as:
- Instrument flight procedures.
- Meteorology specific to instrument flying.
- Radio navigation and equipment.
- You’ll complete one written exam that tests your understanding of these areas.
- Theoretical knowledge is essential, covering topics such as:
- Skill Test
- The final step is a practical flight test with an examiner, during which you’ll demonstrate your ability to fly and navigate using instruments alone.
The IMC/IR(R) rating can typically be completed in 2 to 6 weeks, depending on your availability and weather conditions. It is often pursued part-time by PPL holders who want to enhance their flying capabilities.
- Improved Safety: Provides the skills to handle unexpected deteriorations in weather.
- Greater Flexibility: Extends the conditions under which you can safely and legally fly.
- Confidence Building: Increases your confidence in navigating challenging situations.
- Enhanced Navigation Skills: Teaches the use of advanced navigation aids and instrument approaches.
