The national private pilots Licence (NPPL) is a simpler and more accessible pilot’s licence for those who want to fly light aircraft recreationally. The NPPL is a great starting point, even for those students who wish to continue to commercial flying.
Then National Private Pilot’s Licence (NPPL) is a simpler and more accessible pilot’s licence for those who want to fly light aircraft. While the NPPL allows you to fly for leisure, it has some restrictions compared to a PPL, making it ideal for those who want to keep things straight forward.
The training for a National Private Pilots Licence (NPPL) includes practical flight training and theoretical knowledge, but with lower minimum requirements compared to the PPL:
- Flight Training
- Minimum Flight Hours: You’ll need to complete at least 32 hours of flight training.
- At least 22 hours must be dual instruction with an instructor.
- At least 10 hours must be solo flight time, including 4 hours of solo cross-country navigation.
- You’ll learn the basics of flying, including handling the aircraft, navigation, and emergency procedures.
- Minimum Flight Hours: You’ll need to complete at least 32 hours of flight training.
- Ground School
- Like the PPL, the NPPL requires you to pass 9 written exams, covering:
- Air law
- Operational Procedures
- Human Performance
- Meteorology
- Aircraft General Knowledge
- Principles of Flight
- Communications
- Navigation
- Flight Planning and Performance
- The theoretical knowledge syllabus the same as the PPL, so the exams can be credited to a PPL further down the line.
- A practical Radio Telephony Test is also required – known as the (FRTOL)
- Like the PPL, the NPPL requires you to pass 9 written exams, covering:
- Medical Certification
- You’ll need a NPPL Medical Certificate, which has slightly less stringent requirements than the Class 2 Medical required for the PPL. A Class 2 Medical and above is also suitable for the NPPL, and is recommended if you wish to progress further in an aviation career.
- Skill Test
- You’ll complete a practical skill test with an examiner to demonstrate your ability to safely pilot a light aircraft.
The NPPL is faster to complete than the PPL, with most students finishing within 3 to 12 months, depending on their availability and weather conditions. The shorter flight hour requirement makes it more accessible for those with limited time.
Why Choose the PPL:
The Private Pilot Licence (PPL) offers maximum flexibility, making it the ideal choice for those who want to enjoy the full spectrum of private aviation. Here’s why the PPL could be the perfect fit for you:

Why Choose the NPPL:
The National Private Pilot Licence (NPPL[A]) is the UK’s main entry-level licence from October 2025 onwards, replacing the discontinued LAPL(A). It’s designed for recreational flying and offers a simpler, more affordable way to get airborne.
-
Faster and More Affordable: Minimum of 32 hours’ training makes the NPPL(A) quicker and lower cost to achieve.
-
Simpler Medical Requirements: Fly on a Pilot Medical Declaration (PMD) or Class 2 medical, making it accessible for many aspiring pilots.
-
Recreational Focus: Ideal for pilots who want to fly for fun within the UK, with privileges tailored for local and regional trips.
-
Easy Revalidation: Every 2 years by experience, with simplified requirements. Microlight hours can also count if differences training is held.
-
Practical and Enjoyable: Carry up to 3 passengers (4 seats total) — perfect for sightseeing flights, day trips, or weekend touring around the UK.
-
Upgrade Path: The NPPL(A) can be upgraded to a full PPL(A) later by adding hours, passing additional exams, and completing a PPL skills test.
If you’re focused on UK recreational flying, want to train quickly and affordably, and prefer simpler medical requirements, the NPPL(A) is the perfect choice.
The NPPL is ideal for those looking to fly light aircraft recreationally. The NPPL is a great staring point for progression onto PPL and CPL, and often offers a more cost effective way to start building the hours required for the CPL at a lower cost.
